The Battle of Northam

Sat 4th - Sat 4th May 2024

Event Details

After this came Harold’s sons from Ireland, at Midsummer, with 64 ships into the mouth of the Taw, and there heedlessly landed; and Earl Brian [Brian of Brittany] came against them unawares with no small band, and fought against them. — Anglo–Saxon Chronicle Manuscript D, Jebson 2007, A. 1068 for 1069 The Battle of Northam was the last act of the Godwin family to retake the throne after Harold's death at Hastings in 1066. This year Morvleydh, a Herred of the Vikings! will be recreating these monumental events as part of the Northam May Fest! Come see how the people of the 11th Century lived, worked and fought. Discover how Devon is changing in period following the Norman Invasion and why the Godwins are not as popular in the South West as they may be elsewhere. For the younger warriors (under 10s) there will be two opportunities to test your mettle (foam mettle anyway) against the ferocious shieldwall of the invading Vikings. Come along and see how you fare!
